Frequently Asked Questions

What are Gaps in Care?

BCBS continuously analyzes healthcare information to look for opportunities to recommend certain tests, medications, or treatments based upon the established best practice medical guidelines. These are called Gaps in Care.

To assist members on their journey to better health, BCBS will notify them of any gaps in care identified for their unique circumstance. The messages may include recommendations to discuss with their healthcare provider or may just be a reminder to schedule annual wellness care such as an eye exam for diabetics.

Members are not required to close any gaps in coverage to earn the wellness premium waiver.

What is the Non-Tobacco user discount?

All PEEHIP members and covered spouses enrolled in the PEEHIP Hospital Medical Group Plan or VIVA Health Plan are each charged a $50 per month tobacco premium.

Members who do not use tobacco products, electronic smoking devices, or other devices related to nicotine or tobacco use can have the tobacco premium waived by certifying under penalty of perjury that they and/or their covered spouse have not used tobacco products or electronic smoking devices within the last 12 consecutive months.

Certification can be done online through MOS or by submitting a completed New Enrollment and Status Change form.

Can I Have the Tobacco Premium Waived if I Do Not Qualify for the Non-Tobacco User Discount?

Yes. PEEHIP members and covered spouses who do not qualify for the non-tobacco user discount may become eligible to receive a waiver of the tobacco premium for either the entire plan year or through the end of the plan year by completing the Tobacco Cessation Program:

- Submit a Commitment to Participate in Tobacco Cessation form.

- To enroll call 800.Quit.Now (800.784.8669) or visit quitnowalabama.com.

- Complete the program. Send PEEHIP a copy of the Certificate of Completion along with a letter requesting a waiver of the tobacco premium through the end of the plan year.

If the Commitment to Participate in Tobacco Cessation form is submitted between October 1 – October 31 you may also request a refund of tobacco premiums paid during the plan year upon providing the program completion certificate.

The waiver will automatically expire at the end of the plan year and the tobacco premium will be reinstated.
