Tier 1 State and Local Active Members
A Tier 1 plan member is any member of the Retirement Systems who had service for which he or she received credit in the Employees' Retirement System or in the Teachers' Retirement System prior to January 1, 2013.

Tier 1 State Police Active Members
State Police is an employee in the classified service under the Merit System Act approved by the Personnel Board to perform the duties of highway patrol or a beverage control agency or crime investigator. The term shall not include a member employed as a policeman participating under Section 36-27-6 of the Code of Alabama 1975. A Tier 1 plan member is any member of the Retirement Systems who had service for which he or she received credit in the Employees' Retirement System or in the Teachers' Retirement System prior to January 1, 2013.
